Chemosis
Chemosis is the swelling of the conjunctiva, the tissue that lines the eyelids and the surface of the eye. There are various causes for the occurrence of chemosis. They include:
- Eye irritation
- Allergies
- Viral infection
- Rubbing of the eye
- Sinus infection
- Headache
- Glaucoma
- Thyroid disease
- Eye disorder
- Post-operative complication
Patients with chemosis may notice that their eye looks like it has fluid on it, or they may experience swelling so severe that they cannot properly close their eyes. Patients with chemosis can often relieve their symptoms through simple home care methods such as:
- Placing cool clothes over the eyes
- Over-the-counter antihistamines for allergy symptoms
If symptoms do not subside, or the eye is painful and red, patients should seek medical attention for this condition.
